Photo and caption by Anthony Lau / National Geographic Travel Photographer of the Year Contest内モンゴル自治区の冬は過酷だ。マイナス20度を下回る環境と全方向から吹く風で、車から出て写真を撮るのが大変だった。男性騎手が、馬を御する技術を見せる寸前、素早くテレフォトレンズを掴んで、朝霧の中で鞭打つ瞬間を撮影した。

ベンユーセフにはたくさん人がいる。マラケシュの通りと比べれば静かでリラックスできる場所。撮影するために、長い間完璧な瞬間を待っていた。

写真はブラジルのパンタナール湿原で撮影したもの。写真を見た時は信じられなかった。自然は、素晴らしい出来事や特別な瞬間を知っている。

午前5時半にゲストハウスに到着した。ガンジス川から昇る日の出を見ようと、なんとなく階段を登って屋上に出た。バルコニーの右手から朝日を眺め、視線を落とした。信じられないことに家族が寝ていた。父親、母親、子ども、兄弟、姉妹、犬、みんな家の屋上で横になっていた。真夏のバラナシでエアコンなしで眠るのは難しい。

この写真は、前回中国の広州市に旅したときのもの。華南師範大学の学生寮だ。みんなランチの休憩中で、もうすぐ勉強に戻らなければいけない。寮は散らかっていて、臭った。

“秘密の池”とも呼ばれている「The Baltinache Ponds」は、チリのサンペドロ・デ・アタカマ付近にある。調べたが、この場所を夜に撮ったのは自分が最初だと思っている。もちろんまだまだ確かめなくちゃいけないけれど。月明かりで照らされた大地をドローンで空撮した。

デービス海峡から、バフィンアイランドの岸を撮影したもの。海が凍る冬に、白くまの母親が子どもと氷山に寝転んでいた。大きな動物なのに、不安定な体勢や、背景の海や氷とを比較すると小ささが際立って見える。
